Brighton Up Your Garden were asked in the Spring of 2010 to manage the new Community Garden being built in Saunders Park Brighton. A volunteers event had been arranged to help build the garden over the weekend of 6th and 7th March 2010 and this proved to be very successful with all age groups including families with young children. During March, we built some raised flower beds with wood sleepers and constructed a matching compost area.
The Community Garden is now fully established and the plant and vegetables are growing like mad! The park is open all year round for the public to enjoy and view the flower beds. The garden has a pond, a bee garden and raised beds with herbs and vegetables. There is seating available and local wildlife benefits from bird and bat boxes. There is an adjoining children’s playground with toilets available.
Special open days are now arranged when the public are invited into the park to enjoy this relaxing green space. These are usually 3 times a year and we hope to keep you informed of the next open day, probably in Spring 2012.
We’ve now made contact with local schools and have arranged several 2/3 hour visits for the children to the look round the Community Garden. It’s great to be able to show them round the site and encourage them to learn more about gardening, nature and wildlife. If you’d like a guided tour and to hear a bit more about the garden’s history and development, please contact us and Rebecca will be delighted to show you round. The cost is £25 per hour and this includes activities, games and of course some gardening! We’ve recently shown some children from St Mary Magdalen Catholic Primary School around the garden.
We are also happy to visit your school and talk about gardening. We have an up-to-date CRB check.
Please contact Rebecca to book your date!
